Sailing out of Seward is pretty ideal! In Resurrection Bay during the Summer months, we tend to see a North wind in the mornings switching to a South wind in the afternoons. We see very light winds in the morning, picking up to 10-15 knots around noon. Seas are around 1-3 feet, getting choppier in the evenings. Water temperature stays below about 55 degrees all summer. As you get further away and leave the bay approaching the Gulf of Alaska, you are more exposed and can see much bigger seas, 10-15+ feet. With storms or more severe weather, expect bigger seas and watch out for Eastern winds which make anchoring even in protected coves more uncomfortable and dangerous due to Williwaws. A williwaw is a strong wind that comes from the other side of a mountain, picking up speed as it comes down the mountain. *In strong Easterly wind conditions, our safest recommendation is heading back to the dock in Seward for overnights.
You have a great chance of seeing some incredible wildlife, beautiful mountainous scenery, and glaciers! In 2-4 nights you could explore several anchorages in Resurrection Bay and Day Harbor, many with opportunities to beachcomb and hike. In May and early June we often see humpback whales and even orcas in Res Bay. June-August, you’ll probably have to get out further to chase them. To get around Aialik Cape and get a look at a tidewater glacier, Aialik Glacier, we recommend at least 4 nights *with a good weather window and 2-3 ft seas. A weeklong charter is your best bet to sail around to Aialik Glacier & Kenai Fjords National Park, see whales along the way, and explore beautiful secluded anchorages. If you wanted to explore parts of Prince William Sound (PWS), plan on more than 1 week with at least a good two-day weather window to get from Seward to the next closest safe anchorage within PWS.
Within sight of Seward, most cell providers have coverage in Resurrection Bay. Once you tuck into a cove or round a corner, you will not have cell service. Monitor VHF radio ch.16 for local boat traffic and SeaTow.
*A Garmin inReach mini is available at an additional rental fee and we can help you connect it to your smart phone for access to communicate via unlimited texting.
No.
Seward has a fuel dock, water, hardware store, shops , restaurants & tourism within the harbor area. Once you leave the harbor, there are no services to re-fuel or re-provision. There’s an active boating, fishing, and tourism presence in the area, should you need help. Plus our boats are covered by SeaTow and the Coast Guard has an active presence in the case of an emergency. All monitor VHF Ch.16.
Seward has a Safeway for all your provisioning and boat-drink needs. It’s a 1/2 mile from the harbor so you’d most likely want to drive there from the harbor unless you’re shopping light. Taxis are available and frequent.
If you’re driving through Anchorage, there’s a Costco and cheaper grocery stores, tax free.
There are lots of great restaurants and local food options in the harbor or 1 mile downtown, so we recommend at least one meal out in Seward!
It’s Alaska! You’re going to need that puffy coat. Even on the warmest Summer days, it can be much cooler out in the wind and on the water.
· Layers: beanie, gloves, puffy jacket
· Rain gear: pants and boots too
· Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses
· Food, snacks, beverages
· Camera, dry bag for secure storage
We’ll give you the rest of the packing list in exchange for your Skipper’s Resume. :P
No. We do not allow fishing on our boats. Sorry, it’s just too difficult to clean.
If you’re staying around the dock for a few days, we can recommend some areas in town to snag salmon. You can rent gear locally, check out atthewagon.com, and the harbor has fish cleaning stations.
Head to the Seward Small Boat Harbor and park on the South end at Seward Mariner's Memorial. These docks (MNO&P) are separate from A-K docks. We will be in contact with you about which slip to get to. Parking is $10/day around the harbor. We might know of some free parking within walking distance for longer trips.
We are a small business. We work hard full-time all Summer and part-time the rest of the year to hopefully be able to pay ourselves to do what we love! But there are lots of fees, bills, and costs to break-even in this business, much less make it successful. We appreciate any help where it’s convenient to you.
Here are some ways you can help:
--Treat our boat as if it were yours. Take care not to scratch surfaces. Handle all hardware, latches, and cabinetry with care. Use proper hand-holds when moving about the boat underway.
--We are charged less when you pay via bank transfer (entering routing#/account#) rather than a CC.
--Bring your own sleeping bags to save us laundry fees. We use the local Suds N Swirl. (So at least we’re supporting another local business if you do need our linens!)
--give us feedback! Share what you loved with the world via a Google review, social media, or any other platform.
